The Truth About Cherokee Housing
Why would we want to go back to a 50 year waiting list? Our current system serves almost 3 times as many people without a waiting list.  Under the previous administration, from 1996-1999, the Cherokee Nation built or purchased a total of 93 homes for Cherokee citizens. This is an average of 23 homes per year. In the last four years, under Chief Smith’s program of down payment assistance and financial counseling, 1,150 Cherokees have been able to purchase or construct a home of their choice, one uniquely suited to their family’s needs. That is an average of 287 Cherokees a year receiving this valuable service.

Why would Bill John Baker want to return to a program that served less than 1/10th the number of Cherokees and resulted in Cherokees waiting years for this help?
