Re-Elect Principal Chief Chad Smith

Working together, we did what we said we would do.

“Understand the needs of our people, encourage participation, and engage Cherokee communities in their government”.

Today, it is obvious that the leadership listens to the people, and has worked to develop our communities and associations to have a bigger and better Cherokee Nation.

Specifically, here are a few of our accomplishments:
  • Worked with more than 80 distinct Cherokee Community groups in the 14-county area by assisting with their growth, constructing self-help community buildings, and facilitating projects, like waterline construction, to bring communities together.
  • Worked with 24 organized At-Large Cherokee Community groups outside the boundaries of the Nation, forging closer ties and providing history, culture and language programming.
  • Made our government accessible to the people with Freedom of Information Act, which requires open meetings, public budgets and other records.

We will continue to improve on our success by:

  • Further working through Cherokee Communities by transferring responsibility and programs to the communities as they develop (i.e. after-school, health and wellness, cottage industry, community gardens and other programs)
  • Assist Communities in becoming self-sufficient by developing their resources.
  • Charter more At-Large community groups to cover all areas where Cherokee citizens live, and bring At-Large citizens to work with at-home Cherokee communities.
