Re-Elect Principal Chief Chad Smith

Working together, we did what we said we would do.

“Provide honest leadership that respects the Constitution and the Laws and Administer an Open Government” at a time when the Nation was in crisis.

Today, Cherokee Nation’s government is a noteworthy and stable leader standing amongst the many tribal and state governments across the United States and we are known for our financial accountability, integrity, transparency and openness. Since Wilma Mankiller, the Cherokee Nation has been a leader in self-governance, with the stark exception of those dark years under the Byrd administration. Since 1999, we restored accountability and picked up where Chief Mankiller left off and we did so with the help of our citizens and employees. As a result, we’ve built a great reputation with federal, state and local governments such that they now honor and acknowledge our Constitution and laws.

Specifically, we have put into practice the following:
  • Free Press Act
  • Freedom of Information Act
  • Multiple layers of internal audit, external audit and regulation providing checks and balances in not only our government, but all business entities
  • Budgets and travel expenses posted publicly
  • Annual audits of our government books and those of all our business entities
  • Earned the prestigious award for Excellence in Financial Accounting nine years in a row
